Gazeta Wyborcza, the first Polish independent broadsheet established in 1989, celebrated its 27th anniversary and awarded its “Man of the Year” prize to Timothy Snyder, Professor of History at Yale University and a Permanent Fellow at the IWM. “Timothy Snyder’s books tell history of bitterness and misery, bloodshed and suffering. And yet they also convey certain optimism: evil can be counterbalanced with faith, hope, and love. To me his great works form an oeuvre written to uplift the hearts – Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Belorussian”, said Adam Michnik, editor in chief of “Gazeta” and a former dissident. “One can believe, like Hungary, that it is possible to break all rules and European Union will survive anyway. But it is a fallible logic. If another country, for example Poland, follows this path, then another and another, the Union will cease to exist. The West needs you! Remember, Poles, that you are not alone,” said Timothy Snyder in his acceptance speech.
