After the end of the Soviet Union, Russian artists eagerly engaged and experimented with the suddenly freely available medium of video.
Popular TV series, advertisments, porn movies, Hollywood blockbusters and masterpieces of Russian film were all used to explore the turbulent political, social and cultural changes taking place at the time. The Western film and media worlds were deconstructed with enthusiasm, and soon also used to engage critically with Russia’s own history and culture-without regard for the then Russian political establishment.
For an exhibition at Knoll Galerie Wien in 2010, the Blue Noses Group (Alexander Shaburov and Viacheslav Mizin) chose video works of about 20 Russian artists and art collectives, providing humourous insights into this period of Russian cultural life, when artists’ engagement with the flood of new imagery inspired attempts to re-evaluate their own culture and tradition.
For the original exhibition in 2010, the Blue Noses Group designed posters in the style of early Russian film advertising for each of the video works shown. A selection of these will now be displayed in the forthcoming exhibition at IWM.
Known for their striking video and performance work, the Blue Noses Group explores the images and cliches of Russian culture and tradition, parodizing and criticizing Russian society, art, politics and religion. The group was originally founded by artists from Novosibirsk and Swerdlowsk (Jekaterinburg). Many of its best-known works were produced by Alexander Shaburov and Viacheslav Mizin.
