The lecture specifies and discusses, in its first part, the three core defining features of liberal democracy: popular sovereignty, constitutionalism and rule of law, and state efficacy. The second part presents some major aspects of populism and highlights the reasons why it must be seen as a massive deviation from the liberal democratic regime form. In the final part, it outlines two paradoxical implications that the politics of ethnic nationalism and “majority tribalism” has had upon European integration and supranational cooperation.
